2021 Review - A Modest recovery

2021 saw a 52% increase from 2020’s low sales, but was still down about 12% from 2019 sales. This was all while maintaining more limited “Pandemic Hours” of 12pm-6pm all year. For the second year of the pandemic we continued to see repeat visits on a more infrequent nature and more limited online sales.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, manga saw tremendous growth in 2021, more than doubling 2019 sales numbers. With the pandemic, there’s both been a dramatic increase in the demand for manga, fueled in part by streaming anime adaptations. Here at Mission: Comics we also repositioned the display of manga to be right up front near the front door. However this growth was hampered by ongoing availability problems. The manga publisher Viz suffered significant supply chain issues throughout 2020, with many of their most popular titles completely unavailable for the entire year. Toys, games and other miscellaneous items saw a near complete recovery to 2019 sales numbers. While sales of graphic novels had a more modest recovery. New comic sales sales did not recover as much, probably due to fewer customer browsing the new comics racks.

This year I decided to separate out the manga category, which in past years was included in the Graphic Novel dataset. Either way, new comics sales returned to a smaller percentage of the overall sales. And bound comics were again nearly half of all sales.

2020

2021

Looking at 2021 by month, we see that sales recovered the most in the first part of the year as vaccines became available. But for the rest of the year sales stayed unusually flat. This was probably due to many people continuing to work from home and limiting their evening activities. San Francisco has been good at keeping out covid numbers down, but this has come with keeping a mask mandate in place the entire year except for a few brief weeks, keeping the shoppers cautious and uncertain. This was probably also affected by still not having the usual tourist visitors to San Francisco. This year, unlike 2020, there was a Holiday season and a sales bump for the month of December. But paired with slightly lower sales in October and November, the fourth quarter was nearly identical to third and second quarter sales.

When looking at the sales data by publisher, BOOM! sales grew significantly, nearly doubling their 2020 sales! This was probably largely because of their strong position in returnability and strong sales for a few key titles. Dark Horse also had a surprisingly good year here with strong sales from a a few key lines like Avatar the Last Airbender, the new softcover EC Archives and Black Hammer collections. From the Big Three, Image saw the greatest recovery, but this was led primarily from their back catalog and overall sales fell far below Marvel and DC. Despite strong efforts in 2021, new Image launches are still failing to connect with general customer base. DC Comics recovered to about their 2018-2019 sales numbers partly due to their strong graphic novel program and Tom King written series. While still just barely beating out DC in raw sales, Marvel had one of the poorest rates of recovery. I believe this in part because their graphic novel program has been unable to match supply to demand. For long stretches of time, many of their best selling books or collections tied to popular TV adaptations were completely unavailable! My hope is that in 2022 this problem will be addressed in partnership with their new distributor Penguin Random House. Already we’ve had announcements of new printings for some of their most in-demand, evergreen collections.

2020

2021

Image graphic novel sales finally saw some recovery, but only inline with across the board graphic novel sales recovery. They still remain far below past sales levels at Mission: Comics.

Marvel and DC graphic novel sales remain virtually equal

Marvel remained the sales leader in single issue comics, but their recovery was modest and nowhere near the growth experienced in 2018 and 2019. I believe this was in part due to reduced interest and demand for their Jonathan Hickman led X-Men line and a general reduction in the number of more casual customers visiting the store and purchasing single issue comics.

DC single issue comics sales recovered to numbers nearly identical to 2018 and 2019

Image comics sales recovered only slightly and remain far below previous years.

TOP 100 LISTS

2021 was James Tynion IV’s year here at Mission: Comics! Collections of both his series Something Is Killing The Children and Department of Truth ranked #1 and #2 in copies sold! With Volume 2 and Volume 3 of Something Is Killing The Children also placing in the top ten!

Brubaker and Phillips’ new series of hardcover Reckless books also did quite well among the usual best-selling Image Comic back list collections.

The hardcover collection of Sarah Andersen’s Fangs webcomic also sold quite well here.

The Incal has always sold well here, and the new softcover edition helped boost those sales as well as news of an upcoming movie adaptation.

Trung Le Nguyen’s Magic Fish was a stand out hit for First Second here.

Stocking a nearly 20 year old printing of Bill Sienkiewicz’s Stray Toasters absolutely paid off. I wish I had known this was still available years ago!

TKO’s Sara and Sentient remain solid sellers, but their more recent offerings haven’t found much of an audience here.

Marvel Comics

Looking at graphic novels by dollars, Something Is Killing the Children Vol. 1 still topped the list even being priced at $20! Tynion’s Department of Truth Vol. 1 also made the top 10 in dollars, despite being priced at just $10.

The Bowie book continued to be very profitable for a second year.

Out of the three possible formats, the Invincible compendiums turned out to be the most popular! And while I did not anticipate that and struggled to keep those in stock, Vol. 1 still sold great.

Brubaker & Phillips’s switch to the hardcover book format worked well here. It’s difficult to know how these might have sold as periodical comic books, but under pandemic conditions where customers are coming into the store infrequently at best I understand the format switch.

The House of X Powers of X collection was unavailable for much of 2021, but even then it still ranked high in dollar revenue. This is an ongoing self limiting problem for Marvel, one I hope can be fixed now that they are working with Penguin Random House.

The new softcover version of Incal did quite well despite being $15 cheaper While the hardcover edition also continues to sell well.

Without periods of being unavailable, the Deluxe Edition of the manga classic Berserk would have ranked even higher.

The Art of B Movie Poster Hardcover from local publisher Gingko Press was a surprise here, as well as the Homies David Gonzales Retrospective Hardcover.

Insight Editions

The best selling single issue comic of 2021 was Keanue Reeves’ BRZRKR launched with much fanfare. Otherwise Jonathan Hickma’s X-Men title continued to lead single issue comic sales here at Mission: Comics.

DC’s Pride one-shot did very well here, in part because it was offered on a returnable basis and I was able to comfortably order a much larger number.

The video game tie-in Batman Fortnite Zero Point garnered a surprising amount of interest, but most of the people purchasing it were just interested in the game download code that came with the comic. Understandably this was not easy to anticipate, and many people had to wait for second and third printings

Titles written by Tom King also continued to sell well here, with the launch of Human Target, the continuing runs of Batman Catwoman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and the wraps of Strange Adventures and Rorschach.

Ed Piskor’s Red Room had a very strong launch, and we continue to sell the second prints of Red Room #1.

Image had one of the their strongest launches here in some time with What’s The Furthest Place From Here #1. We might have sold even more if we’d been able to get more copies of the 7” single variant with a song from Jawbreaker’s Blake Schwarzenbach. Hopefully we’ll have enough of the second pressing when it arrives later in the year. Sales for #2 did not chart and we’re dramatically lower.
